Notes from the Bridge

A Glowing Tribute to Concrete

By

Eating lunch in the ‘Concrete’ cafe at the Hayward Gallery, my attention was directed toward a cement mixer bolted to a concrete ledge; part of the endless dull-grey escarpment that forms the South Bank Centre…

On the mixer was applied neon tubes. Mesmerized by the light emanating from the tubes, I suddenly realised this glowing industrial relic was a serious piece of art. Of course, how obvious – placing a cement-mixing machine among acres of poured concrete was an ironic tribute to cement… Artistically provoked I walked out into the concrete wilderness of the South Bank .
